Ferrari Buyers Falling Out of Love With Red

Google search Ferrari, now click the little “Images” button... Most of the pictures are red, aren’t they?! However, we saw a brand-new 458 Italian cruising the streets in its white undergarments. It looked very cool and a bit excentric, but it just didn’t have the presence of a true Maranello marvel.

It seems that this phenomenon is becoming widespread, as the number of Ferrari being sold in the color of Coca Cola, Santa Clause and blood is on a steady decline. According to Autoblog’s Italian wind of operation, just ten years ago, 85 percent of Ferraris were sold in the same color as chilly peppers, yet the number has dropped to 45 percent.

It’s a shame really, as Rosso Corsa, as the Italians call it, has been used to identify both the company’s supercars and race cars since way back in the day. After sponsor-inspired liveries were introduced to F1 in 1960s, Ferrari stuck to its identity and kept the traditional color.

In the day and age of rappers and reality TV stars, customers want to customize their cars to match personalities and tastes, and gentlemanly traditions are put on the back-burner. In fact, Ferrari says this is the area in which it has made on of he biggest leaps in terms of personalization, not only because more colors are available, but because technology has improved because of it. After all, it takes a lot of work to make baby-blue paint stick to both carbon fiber and aluminum.

We’ve all seen the trend for two-tone Ferraris taking shape, but the Maranello carmaker can also provide a color that’s created based on a sample provided by the customers. Basically the sky’s the limit - just don’t let Paris Hilton have one please!
