Ferrari 458 Italia Spider in the Works

Italian manufacturer Ferrari's chairman Luca di Montezemolo let it slip that the company is looking into developing a Spider version of the recently introduced 458 Italia. Although he was unable to say when the Spider version will be introduced, rumor goes it will not be sooner than two years (in F430's case, the Spider version appeared one year after the closed top).

"The 458 will follow in the footsteps of the 430 Scuderia and will be the first car to have all the controls mounted on the steering wheel. The price list will be 197,000 euros and deliveries will begin in the second half of January. We are also considering a Spider version, but no sooner than several years," he was quoted as saying by quattroruote.it.

The 458 Italia was introduced at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show. The supersportiva, as di Montezemolo calls it, is powered by a 4.5l V8 direct injection engine fitted with the traditional flat-plane crankshaft.

The engine develops 570 horsepower at 9,000 rpm and 540 Nm of torque at 6,000 rpm and is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. It does sixty in 3.4 seconds and accelerates until it reaches 325 km/h (200 mph).

"The 458 Italia is designed to fulfill the expectations and ambitions of our most passionate clients, the 458 Italia continues the Ferrari tradition of putting the thrill into driving as a result of track-derived technological innovations," the manufacturer said when the car was unveiled.

As di Montezemolo said, the car will be available starting mid-January, at prices starting from 197,000 euros.
