Tuning cars these days seems to be going out of control. When one decides to give his/her car more power, he has to ask himself this one question: is it worth it?
Now, I’m not talking about the power/cost ratio that you have to take into account but rather about the possibility of damaging your car. Famous tuners around the world like AC Schnitzer and Hartge offer warranty for their products but they also tend to charge extra for their products even though, at first, the power increase they guarantee might not be as impressive as other choices out there.

Take, for example, the AC Schnitzer tuning program for the E87 118d that takes the 2-liter turbocharged engine up from 126 HP to just 143. That’s what people call a mild tune. However, as unimpressive at it might seem, the power increase and parts on your car will benefit from an extended warranty, to make sure you don’t have any problems whatsoever with the reliability of your car.

On the other hand, new companies like BR-Performance offer a lot more power for the buck but no warranty. For example, they just released a new ECU map for the 116d model that takes the power output of the 2-liter turbodiesel car from 116 HP and 260 Nm of torque to 193 HP and 439 Nm of torque, tested on the dyno.

That’s an increase of 77 HP just by flashing the ECU! But how healthy is it really for the engine? After all, it’s a 66 percent power increase and the engine, turbocharger and gearbox weren’t built to handle such numbers.

Therefore, as impressive and cheap this tuning program might seem, the risks you undertake are far greater than they seem at first. Furthermore, there’s no word about a warranty program for such vehicles and you might end up spending more than you bargained for in the end.
