Export Honda Civic Production Begins in Indiana

Japanese manufacturer Honda announced it began production of its Civic sedans for sale in 23 Latin America and Caribbean countries at its facility in Greensburg, Indiana. The first Civics to roll off the assembly lines were shipped last week. This is not bad news, however, for the US market, which will still remain the primary market for the Indiana-built Civics.

"Manufacturing products for export broadens the experiences of our associates, contributes positively to America's and Indiana's international trade, and shows our commitment to the continued growth and evolution of our business in Indiana," Rick Schostek, Honda Manufacturing of Indiana vice president said in a release.

The Civics bound for export will take to Mexico, to countries throughout Latin America, the Caribbean, and the US territories of Puerto Rico, Guam and Saipan. It is hoped the export of the Civic will add serious value to the already 3 million exported vehicles since Honda US began shipping cars out of the country, in 1987. The Civic will join the already exported Accord coupe, Pilot crossover, Odyssey minivan and Acura TL sedan.

"We designed our Greensburg plant to be world class, and thanks to the spirit and quality work of our Indiana associates, we will soon be proving it around the globe," Yuzo Uenohara, Honda Manufacturing of Indiana president added.

The 2010 Civic has a starting price ranging from $15,655 (Civic DX Sedan manual gearbox) to $27,000 (Civic Hybrid Sedan CVT with leather, Navi and XM Satellite Radio). It comes equipped with a choice of four engines: 1.8l i-VTEC 140 hp, 2.0l i-VTEC 197 hp, 1.3l i-VTEC hybrid and 1.8l i-VTEC powered by natural gas.
