Two good friends visited me for the first time since I moved to the countryside. After fiddling with the RX-7 for a few hours, we saw down for lunch. And then, I brought out all my cases of unopened Hot Wheels collectibles.
They spent 30 minutes looking at the models that caught their eye from the get-go, as they're both passionate about the hobby. Alex has been buying Red Line Club-exclusive cars for years but has recently decided against trying. He couldn't get the Overdrive membership, and he's sick of missing out on his favorite cast due to the intense competition.

But he will probably give Mattel's newest item a go anyway. I've seen quite a few veteran collectors complaining that the diecast manufacturer keeps reusing older castings. But as we've seen in a recent preview, newer models are coming for 2024. The 1993 Ford Mustang Cobra R has been around since 2022, and it's not hard to tell that Brendon Vetuskey designed this one.

We've seen four variations in three years, and the new Red Line Club exclusive is the fifth one. After a glance, you'll see that the first four iterations could cost around $1,300. The 22nd Annual Hot Wheels Collectors Nationals version in Metalflake Cyan is my favorite; Mattel only made 4,000 units. Last year's 37th Annual Hot Wheels Collectors Convention Cobra R is rare, with 6,200 units ever coming out of the factory.

The 2022 and 2023 models are slightly less desirable, with no number on the back of the card. The diecast manufacturer experimented with various wheel designs, but I don't feel any options have been particularly good. That's about to change for 2024, as the Real Riders 5 Spoke Modern rims are much better in grey than in black.

Like before, this RLC-special casting features an opening hood that provides a closer look at the small-block V8 inside. However, the main change is that the new iteration is a Pink Edition model. It's not the first color that comes to mind when discussing this car, but it doesn't look bad. Mattel chose Spectraflame Pink as the go-to color for the RLC Party collectibles since it introduced the Bye Focal some 20 years ago.

Thinking back on some of my favorite vehicles in this series, I'd opt for the '70 Dodge Power Wagon, the Volkswagen T1 Rockster, and last year's Nissan Skyline GT-R (BNR34). I just hope we won't have to see another set of Redline wheels again; they're just too outdated.

I'd like to point out two little details about the Cobra R: the PNKSTNG license plate and the pearl-white interior. You can try to order it on April 16, 2024, at 9 AM PT if you don't mind spending $28. I think I will just try my luck with the next release.
