Cyberpunk 2077 might be nearing the end of its life, but it's not going out without a huge bang. While no one could argue that the 2020 launch was one of the biggest blunders in gaming history, CD Projekt RED has made good on its promise to fix the game with updates. On September 26, CP 2077 will have one final major content update, but not every feature is free for the base game.
To play the $30 Phantom Liberty DLC, you need the base Cyberpunk 2077 game. Whether you like it or not, the developer has said this is undoubtedly the first and last expansion.

In an interview with the VGC media outlet, Michal Nowakowski, Senior Vice President of business development, said, "As we have announced a long time ago, we're not going to make a second or third expansion. This is the only expansion of the game, and it has nothing to do with the numbers and how satisfied or not we are with sales or anything of the kind."

The main reason is the 15-year deal they've made with Epic, who owns Unreal Engine, to make every future title in Unreal. Previously, the team has been working with their proprietary REDengine 3, which produced Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077. The decision was of a technical nature.

With the raving success of Cyberpunk, there will surely be another installment in the next 5 years made in Unreal Engine 5, which could look phenomenal. As for how many bugs it'll have... that's an entirely different can of worms.

Now, returning to our neck of the futuristic woods, let's see what's new in Phantom Liberty that won't be featured in the base game like other upgrades and overhauls from Update 2.0.

The paid expansion is only out on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5, meaning no last-gen like PS4 and Xbox One. And certainly no Switch.

One of the first things you'll see is Dogtown, an entirely new and dangerous district to roam around and meet new characters with fresh storylines. There are also new gigs, quests, and boss fights.

Then, you'll have vehicle missions and airdrops, which CD Projekt RED calls "endless dynamic events." Most likely, these are similar to "daily quests" from MMOs, which aren't revolutionary but offer more content for hardcore fans.

If you do these assignments, don't forget to equip the vehicle missile launchers at your disposal. The new Relic skill tree is jampacked with fresh abilities to make every encounter more entertaining. Think of it like an extra skill tree with newfound powers.

Over 100 new items like cyberware, cars, and various fashion articles have been introduced. Finally, the level cap has been increased to 60, so you don't feel stuck in a rut.

As far as swan songs go, Phantom Liberty sounds excellent for fans and doubters (like me) alike.
