The Chinese were preparing to take over the European Car of the Year 2024, with 25% of the candidates being made in China. But the shortlist leaves most of them out. American models did not get much luck either.
Seven cars made it to the shortlist for the European Car of the Year 2024. And four of them are electric SUVs. The Peugeot e-3008, the Renault Scenic, the Volvo EX30, and the Kia EV9 are running for the European trophy. The BYD Seal, BMW 5 Series, and Toyota CH-R are keeping them company.

The only pure Chinese model that remained in the race is the Seal, wearing the BYD badge. BYD had no fewer than four models on the list of 28 cars, with the Atto 3, Dolphin, and Han being left out.

The electric Peugeot 3008 is trying to reclaim the crown for the model that won the European Car of the Year award back in 2017, the ICE-powered 3008, the year when the second generation was launched. Twenty years before, the Scenic had won the crown. In 1997, it was still an MPV. Now it has morphed into a crossover and hopes to do the trick once more.

The all-new China-made Volvo EX30 EV also has big responsibility in the game. The Volvo XC40 won the crown in 2018.

For BYD, though, it is the first time a model coming from them makes it to the shortlist of the European Car of the Year. Meanwhile, BMW has had a representative among the finalists several times, but has never won the award. They finished second several times as well, in the 1960s and 1970s, so the Munich-based firm has high expectations when it comes to the 5 Series.

Kia hopes that the seven-seat EV9 SUV will follow in the footsteps of the EV6, the car that won the 2022 award. Hopes are just as high for Toyota, with the CH-R remaining in the race as the only hybrid. The Yaris won the European Car of the Year award back in 2021.

A total of 59 jurors from 22 countries selected the finalists out of the 28 eligible cars for the 2024 award. Two Russian members are still suspended.

Each candidate is a new car on sale in five or more European markets. After further test drives and a final round of voting, we will find out the European Car of the Year winner on February 26, 2024, at the Geneva Motor Show. This year, the Jeep Avenger went home with the trophy.

The Ford Bronco, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Lucid Air are the American models, which did not make it to the final round of the European Car of the Year 2024 award.
