A consensus has apparently been reached in the European auto industry on Thursday, as Inside Line reports automakers want a universal standard for charging stations.
The European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) has announced a joint proposal that will enable the use of one type of plug that’s not dependent of the car make, model, electricity provider or country.
“This is a major step towards the broader introduction of electrically-chargeable vehicles in Europe and paves the way for a harmonised solution around the globe,” said Ivan Hodac, Secretary General of ACEA.
“We call on the European Commission, the standardization bodies and the infrastructure providers to adopt these recommendations and to clear remaining issues as soon as possible,” he continued.
Carmakers should start adopting universal EV plugs across the industry starting 2017. The uniformization should make the industry even more lucrative if EV ever reach the estimated 3 to 10 percent of the overall car sales by 2020 to 2025.
