We’ve seen a lot of tuners out there claiming that they have somehow broken the ECU units on the new M3 and M4 models and therefore flashed them with new parameters to offer better numbers. As we said in the beginning, it was all fake, as most of their solutions were actually piggyback versions and not ECU flashes.
The latest name in this contest is ESS Tuning, a company that all M3 enthusiasts are familiar with. However, unlike their rivals, they came out sincerely and said from the get go that their solution is a piggyback, not a proper ECU flash mod.
With a price tag of just $995, their tuning proposition offers the S55 engine around 60 to 70 HP more and a similar amount of pound feet of twist. That means, as you can see from the graph below, that the engine will be making around 470 HP and 480 lb-ft (650 Nm) of torque.
Furthermore, the guys from ESS wanted their kit to offer these numbers on any car so they used 91 octane fuel to get their numbers. Also, the power gains are mostly noticeable in the 4,000 to 5,000 RPM range, in order to avoid losing traction in lower RPM range.
This Stage 1 kit is basically all ESS will be offering for now. According to the company, a Stage 2 isn’t in development at the moment as more power wouldn’t be as linear across the range with the solutions the guys have right now. However, in the future we might see some more solutions popping up.
