The Bonneville salt flats (and salt flats in general) form a natural attraction for the speed freak. They have been doing so for more than a century, as at the beginnings of motoring, there were no adequate roads on which to max out one’s car.
In a recent BMW commercial, the new M5 is taken to the salt flats where it is driven at its top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph), as it passes through (and below) several obstacles (glass bulbs, huge balloons filled with water and a semi-bullseye) smashing everything in its path.
The ad is quite spectacular and beautifully made, and is well worth a watch, even if you aren’t into the new (speaker-powered) M5. Another highlight is the car’s stunning blue paintwork which really looks good going flat out in the barrenness of the salt flats.
