The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration today announced that BMW is recalling 2,642 2012 X5s, 2013 X5s and 2013 X6s, fitted with diesel engines, due to an engine bay fire risk.
To be more specific, the power steering fluid could leak, reaching the hot exhaust, which could lead to a fire. But let’s hear it in official words: “Due to a machining error of the steering gear surface, power steering fluid may leak. Leaking power steering fluid can spray onto hot exhaust parts, increasing the risk of an engine compartment fire."
BMW issued the recall on its own, not due to customer complaints, with the automotive producer explaining that it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this problem. The company discovered the problem after a steering test that was performed at its Spartanburg, South Carolina, site, on May 29 and 30.
BMW dealers will replace the steering gear and the campaign is set to kick off next month. You can contact the carmaker at 1-800-525-7417.
