Even though production of Volkswagen XL1 has yet to commence, word has it the German automaker could start building the Ducati-powered XL1 in 2014, right after introducing it at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
According to Autocar, development and testing of the Ducati-engined XL1 sportscar is well underway, the company’s head of R&D, Hans-Jakob Neusser revealed last week. “Yes, we are working on it internally. It is a very special project,” he said.
Called “Projekt XL Sport”, the upcoming limited-edition vehicle was preview to a group of students at the Vienna University of Technology in Austria in late September. The vehicle sports the 190 horsepower 1,198cc engine that powers the Ducati 1199 Panigale motorcycle.
As a brief reminder, the standard XL1 is motivated by a 47 HP two-cylinder 800cc diesel engine and a 27 HP electric motor powered by a 5.5 kWh battery pack.
