The production version of Volkswagen’s XL1 261 mpg hybrid will go on sale at €110,000 in Germany, the Wolfsburg-based automaker announced today. Production will be limited to only 200 units, 50 less than the previously rumored 250 examples.
The Volkswagen XL1 is motivated by a 47 horsepower two-cylinder 800cc TDI engine combined with an electric motor producing 27 HP thanks to a 5.5 kWh battery pack. The vehicle has a drag coefficient of 0.189, a total weight of only 1,752 lbs (795 kg), and can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 12.7 seconds.
Top speed is electronically limited at 99 miles per hour (160 km/h), while total range is rated at 310 miles (499 km). When switched to electricity only, the hybrid can travel 31 miles (50 km). The vehicles will be hand-built from carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). Fuel economy is estimated at 0.9 liters/100km, which means 261 mpg US and 313 mpg UK.
