Drug smuggling 101: if you’re going to risk your freedom and probably your life to do it, make sure you don’t hide the drugs where everyone can see them. It kinda defeats the whole idea of “hiding” something, you know.
A 65-year-old man was detained at the airport in Barcelona, Spain, after trying to bring in about 1.1 pounds (503 grams) of cocaine from Bogota, Columbia, La Vanguardia and Policía Nacional confirm. That alone isn’t exactly shocking, because drug smugglers are caught all the time: it’s a risk that goes with the territory. Occupational hazard, if you will.
What’s outstanding about this incident, which actually occurred on June 18 but is only made public now, is the fact that the man tried to hide the drugs in the false bottom of his hairpiece. It was all very conspicuous and, as if trying to make it even more so, the man placed a hat over the toupee.
However, it was his nervousness that finally betrayed him, a source from the Policía Nacional tells the Spanish publication: agents observed him even before they stopped him for a search, because that’s what they’re trained to do. Especially when they’re handling passengers on flights from countries known for their drug operations / smuggling.
“His hairpiece was very strange, but the agents at the airport are very well trained to focus on details such as a passenger’s attitude. They noticed that the man was very nervous as he going through security checks,” the source explains.
The man, whose identity hasn’t been made public, remains in the custody of the Policía Nacional. he’s been charged with a crime against public health. The street value of the drugs he was carrying is estimated at 30.000 euros (approximately $33,000). Because this is an ongoing investigation, further details on the case are not available right now.
