Previously known as the Caravan, the Grand Caravan hasn’t been changed too much since the fifth generation rolled out in 2007 for the 2008 model year. The oldest minivan in the segment is not long for this world either, and Dodge is expected to end production in Canada in May 2020.
Citing a weekly report from Autoforecast Solutions, Automotive News Canada highlights that the Grand Caravan’s assembly line would grind to a halt on May 22nd. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles didn’t confirm the information, nor did any officials from the Windsor, Ontario plant. The question is, what happens next?

Chrysler is the answer, betting big on the Voyager for the 2020 model year. A re-badged Pacifica with less standard equipment, pricing for the starts at $28,480 for the L trim level. The Grand Caravan retails at $28,535, which goes to show that FCA is somewhat oblivious to the market’s trends.

Voyager production is scheduled to start in Windsor in August 2019, and the newcomer is “marketed toward budget-conscious families and fleet customers.” This doesn’t sound all that different from the Dodge Grand Caravan, and this makes us wonder if the Chrysler brand has run out of ideas.

The only other nameplate in addition to the Pacifica and Voyager is the 300, a full-size sedan that doesn’t hold a candle to the Charger despite the higher starting price. Adding insult to injury, FCA didn’t even develop a Hellcat-engined 300 to lure new and performance-oriented customers to the brand.

Focusing our attention back on the Voyager, three trim levels will be available for 2020. One of them is the LXi, a fleet-only option with all the bells and whistles you would imagine from such a vehicle. On the downside, there’s no automatic emergency braking or adaptive cruise control available, not even as optional extras. For a Chrysler product and the 2020 model year, that’s a big disappointment by all accounts.

Instead of an ending note, here’s a question for you. For family duties and more, would you take up Chrysler on the Voyager or choose a more reliable minivan such as the Toyota Sienna or Honda Odyssey?
