Following yesterday’s teaser photo, Detroit Electric has now fully revealed the exterior design of their production SP:01 model, an electric sportscar said to be the fastest of its kind when it will be on sale next year.
If you’re going to say this “obscure company" is here to copy Tesla’s Roadster model that went extinct two years ago, you’re argument is absolutely invalid. Detroit Electric was a leader in the EV market back in the early 1900s, but unfortunately went bankrupt once the gasoline engine started to get massively adopted in the auto industry.
But times are changing, people saw how bad internal combustion engines are for their health, electricity is gaining fans again and Detroit Electric is back from the dead with its ultra-fast buzzing... Lotus Elise.
As you’ll see in the handful of pics bellow, the SP:01 is massively influenced by the Elise, but it does comes with it’s own mods to improve airflow and reduce turbulences for a better stability, like a redesigned front end, a new under-body diffuser and a rear wing.
The whole car weighs just 2,480 lb (1,125 kg) and is powered by a mid-mounted electric motor whirling up to 281 hp towards the rear wheels. The company says this will translate in a 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) time of 3.7 seconds. Range won’t be that much of a problem if you’re gentle with the “gas” pedal, as the 37 kWh battery pack should provide 178 miles (288 km) of driving.
Having been already revealed as a ready-to-go-into-production car, the Detroit Electric SP:01 is said to be available in early 2015 for markets in the US, Europe and Asia. And despite the company’s name, the car will be actually assembled in... England.
