Soon after the 2015 model year Chevrolet Volt was accidentally unveiled by dealer inventory listings back in July, the golden bowtie hinted there will be an all-new Volt coming next year. Although it's officially slated to debut at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, information is scarce on the second-gen Volt.

Still, what you can see in the photo above is the rear design of the all-new successor. If that's not nearly enough to float your PHEV boat, then General Motors CEO Mary Barra's announcement is going to.

Barra confirmed that the GM Flint Engine Operations facility will build a 1.5-liter gasoline-fed four-pot engine that'll be used as the 2016 Chevy Volt's range extender. She highlighted that the powerplant is all-new in design, part of General Motors's upcoming family of internal combustion engines.

Unfortunately for fans of the plug-in hybrid vehicle, Chevrolet didn't say a word about the ponies this 1.5-liter four-cylinder range extender is packing. Even so, we can tell you that the GM Voltec 4ET50 Multi-Mode Electric Drive unit will be assembled by the company's Warren Transmission Plant.

“We must provide the breakthrough technology that our customers want,” declared General Motors CEO Mary Barra. “Our investments in the Chevrolet Volt and Michigan signify our commitment to lead the industry in technology and innovation.” General Motors hinted that within the first year of 2016 Volt production, 70 percent of the plug-in hybrid's components will be made in the United States of America or Canada.
