2012 brought us an interesting model in the BMW line-up, we're talking about the M550d, of course. Up until then, the fastest diesel from BMW was the F13 640d with its tri-turbo 3-liter diesel engine and 313 HP.
The unveiling of the M550d made one thing clear: BMW was aiming at fuel efficiency and power at the same time. This new objective on the Board of Management's table showed us just how much diesel engines evolved since they were first put on a car, back in 1933.
Now think about the new model in the BMW line-up that is supposed to hit the dealerships around the world this year: the 4 Series. This new car will replace one of the most successful Bimmers ever built: the 3 Series coupe. It will have a new design that will carry on the Bavarian company's DNA and it will definitely be a 'smooth', luxurious car.
Now imagine you can combine the two. On one hand you have the luxury and aggressive feel of the Coupe and on the other you get immense torque levels and extreme fuel efficiency.
BMW already confirmed that future 4 Series models will include diesels and we know for sure they are planning an M4. Why not an M450d? I'm sure there is a market out there for this kind of cars and that the numbers will be impressive, to say the least.
The bigger, heavier M550d xDrive has incredible numbers already. It reaches 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.7 seconds and has a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h) while the fuel consumption reaches 37 mpg (6.4 l/100km).
Imagine what the numbers would be on a lighter (the M550d weighs nearly 2 tones, whilst the 4 Series will max out at around 1.5 tones), more agile car, like the 4er. Just the thought of it sends shivers down my spine.
