Dacia's Debut in Australia Stalled due to Sourcing Issues

Dacia could enter the Australian market in the future, pending on future product developments and non-European manufacturing sites, writes the Australian website goauto.com.au.

Currently, the biggest drawback for Dacia is the absence of right-hand drive vehicles from its range, but also the lack of automatic transmissions. But the future right-hand drive availability on models suited to Australians' tastes, as well as production facilities closer to the continent would make the arrival of the Romanian brand to Australia logical.

"We are working on having right-hand drive vehicles for the UK market. And if we can do that then we would be delighted to have it for Australia. But this vehicle (Duster) is designed and produced for the European market, so it is also about having the right product", said Renault Asia Pacific director Xavier Casin, quoted by GoAuto Media.

"There is an alliance factory in Chennai, India, and they need a vehicle that meets their needs, and so if this was going to happen it would help", added Casin. Therefore, if the Indian plant begins to manufacture Dacia models in right-hand drive versions, it may open the door to importing the Duster and other future Dacia models Down Under. The Renault official continued by saying that if Dacia-built vehicles would ever be marketed in Australia, it is very unlikely that they would be sold under the Renault brand.

The compact SUV Dacia Duster will enter the UK market in 2012 (also a right-hand drive market), two years after the launch of the vehicle in continental Europe.
