As the new CAFE regulations are closing in, Toyota was already pondering fitting the Tundra with an oil-burner last year. The latest reports now tell it will indeed be a Cummins diesel.
According to WardsAuto, the Tundra will also come with a 5-liter V8 Cummins turbodiesel engine like the Nissan Titan will get next year. In the Titan, the 5-liter Cummins is expected to make over 300 hp and more than 500 lb-ft of torque, which may apply to the Tundra too.

The new engine will probably come out along with the next-generation Toyota Tundra that will arrive in 2016.

Wards’ source also said that the Cummins diesel might be a placeholder for Toyota, as the carmaker has also been working on its own diesel engine for the Tundra in 2007 and 2008 but it never came to reality due to the global economy decline.

Toyota and Nissan won’t be the only automakers to offer diesel pickup tucks as Ford already has the 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 on the F-Series medium-duty range, the Ram has a 3-liter EcoDiesel V6, while GM had diesels on its medium-duty trucks for quite some time.
