Diesel engines never worked for the US market and if you were not an 18-wheeler driver you never needed one there. However, fuel prices and the need for cheap torque on pickups are turning the auto industry towards offering such powertrains.
Nissan and Ram are already known to introduce diesel-powered pickups into their range and even Toyota has recently announced to fit its Tundra model with an oil-burner sometime soon.

Toyota corporate manager Rick LoFaso told Edmunds that the company is considering a diesel engine to be introduced among its current engine options for the Toyota Tundra, possibly a Cummins one.

"I think Cummins would bring instant name recognition and obviously they are a leader in diesel engine technology. That is not the first time we would have to tie up with somebody else," LoFaso told told our source.

Toyota also hinted that a hybrid powertrain might find its way as another engine choice for its pickups.
