As Nissan and Ram are already known to introduce diesel-powered trucks into their lineups, Toyota is also on its way to fit the Tundra with an oil burner soon.
Recently speaking with AutoGuide, a source familiar with the project told them that the diesel Tundra is already being tested. Tundra chief engineer Mike Sweers however didn’t confirm nor denied the rumors, but he said that the diesel powertrain won’t be released until 2017, when the new Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) regulations will kick in.
Toyota corporate manager Rick LaFaso also said a while ago that the company is considering a Cummins diesel engine to be fitted under the Tundra’s hood. He explained that the choice would bring instant name recognition while the company’s expertise in diesel engines will provide top performances.
