The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is one serious track-oriented machine, and with a 640 hp supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine, track-tuned suspension, steering and brakes, it is truly a force to be reckoned with. However, so is the new SRT Viper GTS, which has the same power output, but is slightly down on torque - it would be interesting to put the two cars head to head around a track, to see which is quickest.
Well, Motortrend have done just that, and have chosen an excellent track to put the two cars head to head, in a time trial to the death - Laguna Seca. Pro driver Randy Pobst was the lucky one chosen to hoon the two cars around the track, and by the end of the day, he managed to cross the line in the ZR1 after 1:33.70, while the Viper was slower, lapping the track in 1:35.77.

Following the comparison, people over in Camp-SRT showed their disapproval of the test via a Tweet posted by Chrysler design chief Ralph Gilles, who said: "There is a lot more left in the car, Randy has always struggled with the Viper [ . . . ] We've tested both cars at several tracks and never seen a gap like that. Many drivers needlessly fear the Viper.”

Still, since the sixth generation ‘Vette is now being phased out, to be replaced by an all-new model, which is set to be unveiled in January, this comparative test is only relevant until then, as the Viper is a very new model, and therefor should not necessarily be compared with a car introduced in 2005.
