For a brand like Cadillac, the current era of electrification and autonomous driving progress is just what the doctor ordered. And while the luxury carmaker has recently announced revitalization plans using the two pillars (more on this below), a top-class digital artist wishes to take us back in time, imagining how a Cadillac sports car would've looked 50 years ago.
Abimelec Arellano, whose work we've featured on multiple occasions, doesn't just stick to rendering a certain machine or the environment around it. Instead, thanks to his What If? series, we can enjoy a small universe built around dreams like the one we have here.

In other words, the digital master also created the kind of brochure cover one would've found in a Cadillac dealership half a century ago.

What if Cadillac had built the Corvette-based XLR of the 2000s back in 1970? This digital stunt answers the question by using the chassis of the C3 'Vette, built between 1969 and 1982, as a starting point.

Unlike the Mercedes-Benz SL rival the lavish American automaker created two decades ago, which came with bespoke exterior and interior styling, this imaginary model is closer to what the Chevy, with its fiberglass body, had to offer.

Nevertheless, both ends of the open-top sports car proposal showcase styling cues borrowed from the de Ville full-size models and other Caddys of the era (note that the Gen 3 was built between 1965 and 1970, while the Gen 4 reigned between 1971 and 1976).

As for the cabin, the list of changes includes the traditional de Ville three-spoke steering wheel, as well as woodgrain trim pieces. And the mélange easily explains the Roadster de Ville name chosen by the artist.

Just like in the case of the XLR, the Caddy gets its own engine. So while the meanest C3s came with 454ci (7.4L) V8s, the 500ci (8.2L) heart of the said Gen IV de Ville can be found under the hood.

Now, as sweet as pixel dreaming is, we can imagine that such an offering would've been held back by the same aspect that prevented XLR sales from reaching the projected level, namely the hefty pricing.

Meanwhile, in the real world, GM is positioning Cadillac as an EV ambassador. And just last week, the automaker used the virtual CES 2021 to confirm that a two-seater battery-powered concept is in the works.

During a presentation that brought us an autonomous EV concept shaped like a pod, GM's global design chief, Michael Simcoe, dropped a few hints on the said model.

We have other concepts coming, including a luxurious two-seater designed for you and someone very special to decompress, relax and enjoy a multi-sensory experience choreographed for more intimate journeys,” the executive explained.

And with those comments appearing to point towards an autonomous vehicle providing various stimuli to relax the occupants, we can expect the future development to be unlike the big coupes Cadillac has accustomed us with.
