About a month from now, the Road Atlanta racetrack will be hosting its annual round of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. For ten hours, teams and pilots will drive themselves to oblivion, hoping to score a win at the historic venue.
As in most of the races of the past years, Porsche will be on-site two, fielding two 911 RSR race cars wrapped in a very special color scheme, meant to honor a very special commercial partner.

Atlanta is home to the Coca Cola headquarters, and since the American beverage company has been involved in motorsport for years, including together with Porsche, the Germans decided they will field their cars in red and white.

The special design of the livery is meant to honor a decades-long tradition that started in the 1980s with the Coke-draped Porsche 935 of the Bob Akin Motor Racing. When that happened, the team claimed podium results, so Porsche is now hopeful the new paint might have a supernatural influence on this year’s race outcome as well.

“Last year we were successful at Petit Le Mans with our Porsche 911 RSR flying the Mobil 1 colors,” said in a statement Steffen Höllwarth, Porsche head of operations for the IMSA Championship.

“These special designs have given us many outstanding moments. And this should also be the case with the red and white Coca Cola paintwork at the season finale on the Road Atlanta racetrack.”

The car raced by the German carmaker in the competition, the 911 RSR is based on the road-going 911 GT3 RS, only tweaked for both more power and better aerodynamics. In the racing configuration, the car’s engine develops around 510 hp.

The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship is a racing series born in 2014 after the unification of the American Le Mans Series and the Grand-Am Series. Cars race in four classes in this competition: GTLM, GTD, Dpi, and LMP2. The 911 RSR runs in the GTLM class.
