Little did the Bavarian automaker know that the styling choices it made for its first-ever fully electric crossover flagship would cause an image storm. The BMW iNext turning into the unimaginatively named iX was nothing compared to the social media backlash concerning the design. Who knew the 4 Series (plus M3 and M4) kidney grille treatment wasn’t the most outrageous decision of the company for the year?
Well, we already know the German automaker’s reaction to fans asking about the well-being of the iX’s designers, and we thought seeing Cristoph Waltz cringe at the sight of this EV would be the last time we were ironical about this model.
Turns out the late (and great) Sir Sean Connery’s “Never Say Never Again” punchline (and 1983 James Bond flick of the same name) applies very well here as well. Sure, BMW just keeps pushing us into such outbursts, serving on a silver platter such ideas like the one in the title.
Never mind us, with the level of commitment these athletes exhibit, it’s more than wishful thinking. Just remember that Jamaican Bobsleigh team members like to use MINIs as a training partner, which apparently caused a stir at the Queen’s palace.
Now, back to the BMW iX and the winter sports commitment of the German company. As per the BMW Group’s release we attached below (in case you wanted to read something serious), the 2020/2021 winter season will see the fully electric model parade in front of spectators and athletes during the “biathlon, bob and skeleton, as well as luge” world cup competitions.
Not sure if BMW remembers, but winters aren’t what they used to be – on account of global warming and all – so there’s a distinct possibility that on-site onlookers won’t get the usual brain freeze needed to keep them from commenting on the iX’s odd naming and styling decisions.
Just so you don’t accuse us of being (too) biased, there’s one element inside the new crossover EV we can’t find out of place. That’s the company’s eDrive powertrain, which on this occasion will present itself with more than 370 kW / 496 hp / 500 PS when the BMW iX will reach the market before the end of 2021.
