We are used to seeing quite a handful of classic air-cooled Porsche 911 projects embrace the restomod trend thanks to renowned American specialists like Singer or Gunther Werks. An Italian coachbuilder/design studio sounds a little more out of the ordinary, doesn't it? It shouldn’t, because Modena-based Ares Design isn’t really a newbie when it comes to restomodding.
Granted, Ares Design has become famous not just because it’s headed by renowned automotive manager Dany Bahar; it’s also well known for its passion project of reinventing the De Tomaso Pantera into the ProgettoUno (a.k.a. Project1).

But there’s more than it meets the eye because the coachbuilder has also created other spectacular commissions since its creation back in 2012. No need to recite them from memory because we have written extensively about them; those include the Corvette C2 Sting Ray rocking a C7 engine, the oddly-named Wami Lalique Spyder, or the recent Land Rover Defender Spec 1.2.

Speaking of timeless automotive icons, their other project for the first month of 2021 is this Porsche 911 Turbo from the 964 series created as a one-off bespoke commission. Subtlety is the name of the game here because Ares “customized and modified according to the vision of the passionate owner” both the aesthetics and the mechanical bits.

The company says work started from the rear, where there’s a new engine cover – complete with the legendary ducktail spoiler – and new, matching black alloy wheels inspired by the Fuchs units that originally dressed up models such as the 911 Carrera RS 2.7 of the 1970s.

Then, it was time to move inside, where the cockpit’s upholstery has been lovingly wrapped in new hides and tartan fabrics – naturally decorated with a houndstooth motif to bring back memories of vintage racing. The driver also got a few modern amenities, such as new instrumentation and a PCCM infotainment system.

Best of all, the engine didn’t get skipped from the upgrade list. Ares added a new intercooler and turbine to the legendary 3.6-liter six-cylinder boxer, thus enhancing the performance credentials from the stock 360 to 425 horsepower.
