Citroen to Use Fiat 500C Approach With DS3 Airflow Convertible

Should we call it a convertible, a cabriolet, a semi-convertible or a semi-cabriolet? It doesn’t really matter to us, because whatever designation Citroen decides to give the tentatively-named DS3 Airflow, this should be one cool car.

According to Autoweek.nl, the model will get a Fiat 500C-like architecture, offering a retractable fabric roof panel that will retain the pillars and door frames.

Some might say that the French carmaker is just following the lead set by the Fiat 500C, but Citroen already has all the expertise to make such a car, since they offered the C3 Pluriel between 2003 and 2010, of which the carmaker sold some 110,000 units.

The advantages over a convertible are clear: the carmaker can lessen the development costs, and the buyer gets superior handling combined with the open-air experience. Though the model was originally expected next year, new reports place the arrival date in 2013.

Unlike the Fiat 500C, which has recently emigrated to America via the New York International Auto Show, Citroen looks set to keep its convertible on its side of the pond. We’re not concerned, but we hope that the Airflow gets a really hot version with plenty of grunt.

"For us, the arrival of such a car is too speculative. For Citroen, the emphasis is currently on the development of the DS line in which the arrival of the DS4 and DS5 are prepared. What then are the plans is not known," Citroen’s Netherlands division reportedly said about the speculation surrounding the DS3 Airflow.
