Just after it emerged from bankruptcy earlier this year, Chrysler announced that it will focus its efforts on the core brands it owns, especially on their US operations. This basically means that Chrysler will sell less models outside the United States and leave Fiat, the new strategic ally of the company, to handle non-US operations. However, according to a report by Reuters citing sources familiar with the matter, Chrysler is willing to sell the Jeep brand overseas.
Chrysler declined to comment on the report but an official statement is expected tomorrow as Sergio Marchionne, the new CEO of the company, will officially reveal the Fiat-Chrysler US product plans.
If we are to trust the rumors so far, the alliance intends to bring several fuel efficient models in the United States, most of them to be rebadged as Chryslers and sold locally through the US-based manufacturer's dealership network. The only model belonging to the Italians and marketed as a Fiat is the 500 which is going to be produced in Mexico.
Inside reports hinted that the manufacturer will kill the Jeep Commander by 2010, the recently revived PT Cruiser by 2012 and, by an unknown date, the Chrysler Sebring, Jeep Compass and Patriot.
"I like that plan a lot. Dodge can be the performance brand. They don't have to be something to everyone, but they have to start being profitable," Rebecca Lindland, automotive analyst at IHS Global Insight, said in a statement in October.
Chrysler's board is expected to meet today, with an official statement likely to be released tomorrow.
