Chrysler Group plans to reduce the number of options offered on its vehicles starting with the 2014 model year in order to allow better quality, improved manufacturing and ordering efficiency.
According to Automotive News, quoting an unnamed dealer source connected to Chrysler, the first models to have their option lists trimmed are the 2014 Dodge Dart sedan, the Dodge Journey crossover and the Chrysler Town & Country minivan. No word on what models are next in line.
The decision was reportedly taken after the automaker conducted a pilot program which revealed that providing fewer options to customers won’t affect sales. The reduced number of options will help Chrysler cut cost and improve quality by reducing assembly complexity.
The Dodge Dart sedan, for instance, can now be had in over 10,000 possible configurations, having no less than 12 exterior colors, 14 interior hues, six wheel models, five trim levels, three engines and three transmissions.
