Chrysler – CAW Tentative Agreement, Official Statements Inside

Although recent media reports claim bankruptcy is imminent for the American car giant Chrysler, the automaker yesterday announced it has made another step towards government funds by reaching a tentative agreement with CAW. Even though the news itself is indeed extremely important for the future of the company, a thing worth mentioning is that such a deal brings the Fiat – Chrysler alliance back in the spotlight, as last week’s rumors claimed the Italian company may pull out of the partnership unless Chrysler agrees with the CAW.

Obviously, Chrysler’s officials were absolutely delighted with the decision and admitted that it doesn’t only help the company in the Canadian market but also globally as it increases chances to finalize the strategic alliance with Fiat.

Just to refresh your memory, the proposed Chrysler – Fiat alliance would bring the Italian automaker a 35 percent stake in the American company, as well as the ability to expand the market coverage in the United States by using the whole dealership network belonging to Chrysler’s units.

And because we promised you the official statements, here’s what Tom LaSorda, Vice Chairman and President, said after announcing the agreement:

"We are extremely grateful to the CAW leadership and to its hard-working members for their openness in this challenging environment to create a new strategy that will lead this company on a path to success. We also want to recognize the Canadian Federal and Ontario governments for their energy and efforts in helping to move this great Company forward."

And here’s the official statement of Al Iacobelli, Chief Bargainer and Vice President – Employee Relations:

"We deeply appreciate the CAW leadership's dedication and commitment to the process by reaching this tentative agreement. The negotiation process is never easy, especially in these historically challenging times.

The forthright discussions and final decisions made by the CAW not only benefit the Canadian represented employees, but help to ensure the Company's future competitiveness. The tentative agreement also helps move the Company one step closer to a partnership with Fiat SpA.

The CAW leadership worked around the clock for its membership to hammer out the details during an extremely complex negotiation. Chrysler management values the hard work of its CAW workforce and appreciates the great lengths the CAW management went to in order to pave the way for the Company's future in Canada."
