US automaker Jeep may start producing its brand-new 2014 Cherokee crossover SUV in China by the end of next year.
Speaking to Automotive News Europe, Jeep CEO Mike Manley confirmed that the Toledo-based company will resume Chinese production in Changsha with the new Cherokee by late 2014.

However, the first examples of the Cherokee will be sold on the world’s largest automotive market starting fourth quarter 2013 as an imported vehicle. Moreover, Chrysler Group’s brand is expecting the 2014 Cherokee to help double volume sales in China.

In addition, Mike Manley told our source that the “lemon-sucking” Cherokee was well received in Asia’s most populated country. “There was no controversy in China. They thought it was great,” Manley explained.

As we reported last week, the 2014 Jeep Cherokee will be sold in China under the Ziyou Guan name, which means “Liberty Light”. The SUV will share Fiat Viaggio’s turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine and will probably gain a 2.4-liter powerplant as well.
