Americans know a thing or two about using trucks instead of cars, but not cars instead of truck. That’s where the australian Ute comes into play, famously designed to cary the pig to market on Wednesday and the wife to church on Sunday.
But gearheads in America have been begging for the return of the El Camino, so it’s not just an Australian thing. It looks like with a little help from Down Under they are going to get their wish!
GM’s Holden division will spearhead the development of a brand new, next-gen car to replace the Commodore back home. But this will also be a global vehicle, sold in China for instance. However, there has been speculation that Chevrolet will market a rebranded version of the current Commodore as the SS or SuperSport, and the car will also be raced in the 2013 NASCAR season.
If the SS sees any reasonable level of success, GM top brass will also launch locally-built versions of the Holden Commodore ute and wagon for the US market.
The now defunct Pontiac brand offered up the G8 Sport Truck, basically the same thing as the Commodore ute, back in 2008. This proved popular until the brand was killed off.
