Set to make its official public debut at the 2012 Los Angeles International Auto Show, the Chevrolet Spark EV will go on sale in California and Oregon, with a price starting under $25,000, with tax deductions included. It is the first EV to offer SAE Combo DC Fast Charging, which cuts its recharge time, up to 80% of the battery’s capacity, to 20 minutes.
Furthermore, with its 130 hp / 400 lb-ft electric motor, it should offer brisk performance, and it is expected to complete the benchmark sprint in less than eight seconds. It draws juice from a lithium-ion battery pack, which is touted by GM as being able to “provide among the best EV range performance in its segment,” despite the fact that they have not yet released an official range figure.
Mark Reuss, President of GM North America was quoted as saying: “When you engineer a technology-filled, all-electric mini car that goes from zero-to-60 mph in less than eight seconds, customers won’t miss the gas [. . .] The Volt and now the Spark EV show that Chevrolet not only knows EVs better than anyone else, we also know how to help customers get the most out of their EV experience.”
