Yet another recall affecting one of GM’s SUV, and this time it’s the Chevrolet Captiva from 2011 and 2012 model years, of which some 15,627 units are affected. The Chevy model could potentially develop a very serious problem - fire due to an issue with the power steering fluid overheating under certain conditions, leading to an engine compartment fire.
No fires have been reported due to this issue yet, and GM sats that it only happens under certain conditions, most frequently when the transmission is left in first gear under manual mode for a prolonged time, causing the overheating.
It’s ironic that the Chevrolet brand stands a risk of being tarnished by fire-related recalls. Most recently, the NHTSA found that the Volt extended-range EV could come ablaze after coolant around the lithium ion battery leaked and crystallized on the battery itself.
