car2go Turns Electric in Amsterdam

The fight which is about to ensue between German manufactures Daimler and BMW on the car sharing front is entering a new stage this week, after the Stuttgart-based car maker announced its next offensive.

Tested again and again in Texas and Ulm, the car2go car sharing program will expand in Amsterdam by the end of the year, with the introduction of what will become the world's first and largest fleet of electric cars meant for sharing.

In all, 300 smart electric models will be deployed in one of Europe's most famous cities. All will be supported through a 300-units strong charging infrastructure, which will also be deployed throughout Amsterdam by the end of the year. By the end of 2012, Amsterdam's EVs will be charged by a network of 1,000 chargers.

“We are delighted that car2go has opted for Amsterdam as one of the first cities in the world to start this electric car sharing project”, said Eric Wiebes, alderman for traffic, transportation and air quality of the city of Amsterdam.

“It fits perfectly into Amsterdam’s strive for improving the air quality in the city. This project brings electric car sharing a significant step closer to a major audience. As car sharing vehicles are completing many kilometres within the city, electrification of such vehicles in particular has a positive effect.”

The introduction of the electric smart fleet in Amsterdam will mark the first major deployment of an electric vehicle to be used for public transport. BMW plans to do the same with the first line of cars that will wear the i badge.
