Car Thieves Don’t Like the Toyota Prius

It seems that being a goodie-goodie tree hugger does come with some distinct advantages. You might be compromising on style, power and speed when you buy a Toyota Prius, but at least thieves will steer well away from your door locks.
The problem is the carjackers want commonly used vehicle parts when they break the car apart. As a result, only one in every 606 from the 2008 to 2010 model year Prius units have been stolen, while the average on similar age cars is one in every 78, according to Bloomberg.

“It’s a one-model car; the parts on it won’t fit anything else but a Prius,” John Abounader, executive director of the International Association of Auto Theft Investigators, said in a phone interview. “If you use a Camry, for instance, the engine might fit in another car. On a Prius, the engine is so different because they’re hybrid.”
