A California resident bought a brand-new Tesla Model 3 and only paid $13,620 before taxes for it! He took it to Twitter to explain how he actually did it.
The carmaker has indeed slashed prices on inventory cars. But there is still a long way from around $37,000 to around $14,000.

The Tesla Model 3 that this customer chose started at $37,120. So buying one for less than half the price would be surreal. But a California resident did it. The customer that calls himself Zohar on Twitter admitted to paying just $13,620 before taxes and fees. How did he get there?

He explains in his tweet that everything was down to a “unique combo of state/local rebates, the federal tax credit and a $4,120 discount from inventory.” He knows he got an amazing deal. That is just about how much European customers would now pay for the Dacia Spring, the most affordable electric car in Europe. But the Tesla Model 3 is no Spring in terms of equipment, safety, output, tech, and size.

What he bought is an inventory base Tesla Model 3 that features the Midnight Silver Metallic body paint, which is included in the price, over a white interior, which comes for $1,000. Also included are the 18-inch Aero Wheels with all-season tires that his car wears.

An inventory discount slashed $4,120 of the price of the compact sedan. A referral reduced it by $500 more and also brought him for free the three-month Full-Self Driving capability.

Due to a financial issue he went through last year, Zohar qualified for the top rebates in each program that is available for low-income individuals. His income has meanwhile increased, so he also has a good credit score tis year. The shift helped him benefit from $7,500 federal clean vehicle credit.

The Monterey Bay Air Resources District offered him a $4,000 discount within the Electric Vehicle Incentive Program. An extra $4,000 came from the Electrify Your Ride Program from Central Coast Community. So he ended up with a total of $23,000 of incentives, going all the way down to $13,620.

He, though, had to pay the $1,390 destination charges and the 9.25 percent tax rate, which amounts to $3,515, taking the total price of his brand-new car to $18,525.

Tesla is indeed working on a budget car

That is probably way less than the budget car that Tesla has been talking about for years. The sub-$25,000 Tesla, which will reportedly be called Model 2 (Model Q and Model I have also been on the speculation list), should roll off the assembly line at Giga Berlin. It will most likely be sold in Europe and China.

The budget Tesla should come as either a compact or a sub-compact car, in the shape of a high-riding hatchback, and should be unveiled in 2024 as Tesla’s most affordable model. But knowing Tesla, nothing is for sure when it comes to the start of production.
