The Cadillac ATS sedan has been marketed from before the first turn of its engine as a rival for European cars. While it does not seem farfetched to own a Cadillac in Europe, that doesn’t necessarily make it a success story yet.
GM engineers tested the car against some other sedan performance benchmarks, and the chassis setup was honed on the Nurburgring. Yet that can also be said about the Corvette, and you don’t see many of those parked to a Twingo in Paris.
To make sure the ATS will be relevant, they started out with a blank canvas, and developed a brand new architecture, since the existing ones were too heavy. The end result is a car with nearly 50/50 weight and what they claim is one of the lowest curb weights in the segment – less than 1,542 kg.
The ATS will go on sale in Europe this autumn, and since they want to “attract new, younger buyers to the brand,” we expect it to be priced competitively, somewhere a bit under €30,000 or there about.
The European auto show debut of the new compact sedan has been officially announced for the Geneva Motor Show, which starts March 6th. Oddly enough, there is no mention of the 2.5-liter four-pot o the 3.6-liter V6. The only engine announced for Europe right now is the 2.0-liter Turbo with 273 hp, a direct challenge to the 328i we presume?
“The ATS ticks all the right boxes for European customers,“ says Wolfgang Schubert, Cadillac Europe Managing Director. “It is stylish, quick, nimble and great fun to drive. We are very excited to be adding this superb vehicle to our product portfolio. It has all the right credentials to seriously challenge the status quo in the premium compact segment.”
