Back in September 2020, GM quietly admitted that small-block V8s suffer from “possible broken valve springs.” According to a technical service bulletin from the biggest of the Big Three in Detroit, only vehicles built from June 1st to September 15th may suffer from this condition.
Although it has only 57 miles (91 km) on the clock, the mid-engine Corvette in the photo gallery appears to have dropped a valve because of a broken spring, rendering the LT2 small-block V8 kaput. The original poster – Michael Crummer – doesn’t mention what model year this ‘Vette is, but from the looks of it, Chevrolet has failed to address the problem mentioned earlier.

As one commenter puts it, “was it built on a Monday or a Friday?” Another commenter suffered from a broken valve spring four months ago with his 2020 model, which confirms that we aren’t dealing with an isolated case. It’s hard to tell if the LT2 is repairable from these pics, but knowing Chevy, the failed components will be sent to headquarters to analyze the problem.

The worst-case scenario would be piston bore issues because there was a hell of a lot of pressure put on that wall to bend the valve. The head could be damaged too, but in any case, the warranty will cover the repair work.

In related news, have you checked the latest 2020 Chevrolet Corvette consumer complaints filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration? An owner received a replacement axle and CV boot after his car leaked a lot of grease after only 660 miles (1,062 km) of careful driving, while another owner reported multiple valve spring failures after 115 miles (185 km).

GM has never been a byword for quality, but I won’t bash the automaker for these issues. Mistakes can be made during the first year of production, and as you’re well aware, the LT2 in the eighth-generation Corvette also happens to be one of the most advanced small-block V8 ever produced.
