A Chinese car is chasing after the American Tesla Model Y in one of Europe's largest EV markets, Sweden. The BYD Atto 3 crossover SUV is the best-selling model in the northern European country.
The BYD 3 Atto, which first debuted in India and Thailand, and is now marketed as the BYD Yuan Plus in China and several other markets from Latin America, became the customers' favorite in the Scandinavian state in July. BYD sold 721 units and is now trying to put an end to Tesla's dominance in the country. And it looks like it really has a chance. The 721 units are almost double compared to the numbers recorded by the Model Y in Sweden in July, 359.

Overall, the Model Y remains Sweden's best-selling electric passenger car overall in the first seven months of 2023. But getting the first spot in July is a boost for the Chinese carmaker, which is trying to ramp its portfolio, as well as geographic footprint. And it looks like they are gaining ground. BYD is the best-selling manufacturer of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles worldwide, overtaking Volkswagen and Toyota.

BYD is in the lead when it comes to electrified cars, too. Elon Musk's brand sold 466,140 examples globally, with BYD outselling them with 700,244 units. But the figures posted by BYD refer to both electric and plug-in hybrids.

The best-selling model in Sweden is, as expected, a Volvo, the XC60, which is ahead of BYD's Atto 3 by a small margin. The XC60 was chosen by 807 customers, according to data provided by the Mobility Sweden automotive association. The Volkswagen ID.4 finished third with 710 units sold, followed by
BMW's i4 with 385 units and Toyota's Corolla with 382.

Tesla's Model Y remains the best-selling car in Sweden in the first seven months, with 8,901 registration, ahead of the Volvo XC40 Recharge with 6,660 and Volkswagen ID.4 with 5,072. The Model Y is also the best-selling electric car in Europe in the first half of 2023.

The price is a major factor in BYD's position in Sweden's best-selling cars ranking. The Atto 3 crossover SUV starts at 445,000 Swedish kronor (approximately $42,000), while the Model Y sets wheels on the Scandinavian soil with an MRSP of 560,160 Swedish kronor, the equivalent of $52,911.

Built on the e-Platform 3.0, the Chinese model is powered by an electric motor, which is capable of developing 201 horsepower (204 PS). Two versions are available: Standard Range with a 49.92-kWh battery back, which can drive for up to 214 miles (345 kilometers), and the Extended Range with the 60.48-kWh battery, capable of traveling up to 261 miles (420 kilometers) before it needs to be plugged in again. The model is 175.4-inch (4.46-meter) long, 73.4-inch (1.87-meter) wide, and 63.6-inch (1.62-meter) tall.
