The 1969 Cougar was the subject of an important restyling, but I believe the most notable change for this model year was the introduction of a convertible.
The first-generation Cougar debuted in 1967 as a 2-door hardtop, so the convertible's debut helped Mercury expand the lineup and provide customers with more choices. A similar strategy concerned the engine offering, as the 1969 Cougar was no longer available with a 289. The 351 Windsor, also installed on the Mustang, made its way to the Courage, with the 2-barrel version becoming the standard engine.

A four-barrel configuration was available, too, pushing the power rating from 250 horsepower on the base unit to 290 horsepower. However, the Cougar could be had with other more powerful engines, too, including a 390 with 320 horsepower and a 428 Cobra Jet with 335 horsepower. Ford eventually allowed Mercury to use the 302 V8, producing 290 horsepower on Boss-equipped models.

A rare 1969 Mercury Cougar convertible showed up on eBay not long ago, promising a package that collectors will probably drool over.

The car comes with low miles, the highly desirable convertible body style (new for this model year), a 351 Windsor V8 with a 4-barrel carburetor, and a Burnt Orange exterior that looks like new. As anyone can guess by looking at the car, it's been the subject of an extensive restoration, so the Cougar is now ready for the road in tip-top shape.

Everything works and looks like new, with the buyer also getting a working power white convertible top, the factory air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, and other goodies that someone interested in an all-original configuration might not be interested in. For example, the restoration process equipped the Cougar with a custom dual-exhaust system, Magnum 500 wheels, a Kenwood stereo system, and other modern goodies that weren't originally offered on the car.

The mileage is impressive, as the odometer indicates just 13K miles – this is the mileage after the restoration.

The Marti report indicates this Cougar convertible is a rare presence thanks to the paint code and the trim package. Fewer than 300 units rolled off the assembly lines in Burnt Orange, and considering the recent restoration, the car flexes a tip-top shape, just like you're now driving it from the dealership.

While I'm not a big fan of the aftermarket upgrades, many people find this Cougar extremely compelling, so they have already entered the battle to take it home. The auction received 20 bids, with the top offer approaching $23K. However, eBay seller primoclassicsint also configured a reserve, and because it's still in place, the car will probably remain where it is for a little longer. The auction will end in approximately two days, so it urgently needs a higher bid to provide this delicious Cougar with a new home.
