The 1969 Cougar was the subject of an important restyling, but I believe the most notable change for this model year was the introduction of a convertible.
The first-generation Cougar debuted in 1967 as a 2-door hardtop, so the convertible's debut helped Mercury expand the lineup and provide customers with more choices. A similar strategy concerned the engine offering, as the 1969 Cougar was no longer available with a 289.
