For quite a while now, we knew that BMW planned to introduce the UKL platform to the market both in the shape of the new MINI and a couple of their own cars. However, up until now, all rumors were pointing towards the 1 Series GT.
According to Automotive News Europe, one of their sources at BMW claims that the FWD platform will also be used on an upcoming Sedan 1 Series. This was an expected move as Audi launched the A3 Sedan and Mercedes-Benz the CLA, both of them with traction on the front wheels.
"The NES is integral to our growth plans. It will be an important pillar in the future 1-series lineup, particularly in the U.S. and China, where sales of small premium-brand four-door sedans are on the rise," their source said.
The projected date for releasing this new model seems to be somewhere around 2017, around the same time the replacement model for the 1 Series hatchback will also be launched.
As for the engines, most likely we'll be seeing the new B38 1.5-liter, 3-cylinder units being extensively used alongside probably one or two 2-liter units. Following current trends we should also be seeing a hybrid plug-in version.
