BMW: Luxury Car Segment in Australia Can Double. 1 Series GT In the Works

In a recent talk with the guys from Car Advice, BMW Australia boss, Phil Horton, said a couple of interesting things that got the media thinking. Amongst them, the hope that the Australian market for the premium segment will double soon.

At the moment, the premium segment is the fastest growing in Australia, recording a 14% increase on a year-to-date comparison with last year. At the same time, other segments barely register an increase of more than 3 percent.

With the introduction of the A-Class that has a really low price, other manufacturers were forced to either offer new incentives for potential buyers or, in turn, lower their prices as well. These manufacturers include Audi and BMW.

The new prices and incentives should bring the automotive market a plus and quite rapidly. After all, Australia's premium segment counts for only 8.4 percent of the total market at the moment and that's pretty low for a mature market.

“I think there is opportunity to go up by another 50 per cent to 12 per cent… even 15 per cent over a period of time. More premium cars are coming in at the lower end. It’s no secret [we are building a] car to compete with the B-Class. We’re going front-wheel drive. Introducing smaller engines,” said Horton, probably referring to the upcoming 1 Series GT model.
