A while back I told you that BMW claims that all the 2014 BMW i8s were already sold, sending anyone who could possibly want one into utter despair.
At the time we also said that cannot possibly fathom how that was possible since the car wasn’t even put up for sale yet or taking pre-orders. Today, Car and Driver called one of their inside sources over at BMW and asked for some more info on the matter.

The answer is kind-of puzzling but makes things clearer in some regards. We now know what Ian Robertson meant when he said that all cars have been accounted for.

You see, BMW, like any other manufacturer, has some projections towards how many cars of each model will be sold over a year. That’s both cautious and responsible, as you don’t want to overstock on one certain kind of car and you also don’t want to send people in layoff without a reason.

That’s why Robertson said what he said. He meant that, based on the predictions BMW has, next year’s inventory of i8s will surely be sold, according to his sales team. In other words, the car will be a success and the Bavarians will sell just as much as they plan to.

However, signs from the market seem to say otherwise. In the US maybe the i8 will be extremely popular but representatives from German dealerships say that they can’t even order one, not to mention that the demand is very low, few people actually showing interest in the new plug-in hybrid sportscar.
