Ever since BMW's US plant, located in Spartanburg, South Carolina, was opened, Josef Kerscher was appointed Managing Director, a position that brought him many successes on both the US market and worldwide.
This year, he will assume new responsibilities in Germany, at BMW's plant in Dingolfing, whilst Manfred Erlacher, Managing Director of the Leipzig BMW plant will take over in Spartanburg.

The switch will take place in November and it might also mark the launch of the X4 Sports Activity Coupe that will be built in South Carolina exclusively. Under Kerscher's leadership, the American plant managed to increase it's capacity from 105,000 units in 2006 to over 300,000 in 2012 with a plan to raise it up to 350,000 in 2013.

At the moment, investments of over $900 million are underway at Spartanburg, to make this the most environmental friendly plant in the world. Up until now, BMW managed to reduce the energy and water consumption per vehicle manufactured by nearly 50% and plant waste by 84%.

Manfred Erlacher, the one that will be taking over, overlooked the massive expansion process that the Leipzig factory underwent in order to prepare for the upcoming i3 and i8 vehicles.
