If somebody asks you who makes the most appealing case for the diesel engine, starting from today onwards, you’re going to have to answer ‘BMW’. The new super-diesel they’ve dropped into the 5-Series touring and sedan, the X5 and X6 combines ridiculous specific horsepower levels with impressive economy.
This engine has spawned four offsprings M550d xDrive sedan, M550d xDrive Touring, X5 M50d and X6 M50d. All of them are powered by a 3.0-liter inline-six diesel with three-turbochargers delivering 381-horsepower and a whopping 740Nm (546 lb-ft) of peak torque.
This revolutionary new engine is a uses three turbos, one larger one and two smaller that spin up faster. All four models also have standard AWD, a tuned suspension setup and a custom body kit with aggressive bumpers and sills.
All the vehicles will hit the European market this April, following their debut in Geneva. Here is the starting price for the new M Performance models:
