BMW M4 Review Examines Its Practicality. Sort of...

When talking about the new M4, most people focus on its performance, compare it to other rivals in its class and don’t really take into account the fact that a prospective buyer should also live with it. That’s why most people don’t really get it in the end.
Not Mat Watson, though. No, he’s one of the luckiest guys on the planet because BMW gave him the M4 to go for a 1,000 mile trip around Europe once and then did the same for a second review, for CarBuyer. Talk about luck.

While the first review was focused on long trips, this one is meant to cover every aspect of the car, including the practical side of things. In the first... 30 seconds, he covers all of that: there’s plenty of space for your sweets. That’s about it.

Then, he gets down to real business. The car has a 3-liter twin-turbocharged petrol engine with all of its cylinders line-up one after each other. The output this combination makes was rated by BMW at 431 HP (or 425 BHP) and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque. However, independent tests rate it at around 470 HP and 600 Nm (442 lb-ft) of torque. That’s quite a lot for a 3-liter.

On the road, the M4 feels comfortable when you want it to be and rock hard when you need it to. The seats are absolutely brilliant and seem to accommodate anyone, including Mat and his team. Sure, there’s not a lot of headroom in the back but this is a Coupe after all. For carrying people get an M3.

Fuel efficiency was also drastically improved over the previous model (that had a naturally aspirated 4-liter V8 making 420 HP), the new M4 being rated at 28.3 mpg on a combined cycle (8.3 l/100 km). That’s what BMW is claiming but separate tests showed that the M4 is actually capable of 24 mpg (9.8 l/100 km).

Other downsides include a bit of tire sound at higher speeds and a some wind noise around the A pillars but those are not things you cannot live with. Check out Mat’s full take in the video below.
