Rumor has it, at the moment, that BMW leaked the price of the new M4 Convertible just hours after the car was officially unveiled on the internet through a press release. That would be atypical of the Germans but not impossible.
The rumor claims that the new car will start at $73,425 in the US, including the $925 destination and handling fee. Such a price, despite being around $8,000 more than for the Coupe would be a competitive one, looking over the competition.
Amongst the car’s rivals you’ll find the Audi RS 5 Cabriolet and the Porsche Carrera Convertible. However, the M4 would be cheaper than both of them at this rate.
The Audi starts at $77,900 and comes with a naturally aspirated V8 making 450 HP and 317 lb-ft (430 Nm) of torque that allows it to go from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 4.9 seconds.
The Porsche, on the other hand, is nearly $30,000 more, prices starting at $96,200 for the manual and $100,280 for the PDK version. For that kind of money you get a 350 HP engine that will take the car up to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 4.8 seconds with the manual or 4.6 seconds (4.4 in sport plus) with the automatic 7-speed.
Compare that to the new M4 convertible. It’s cheaper and faster than the two. The S55 engine makes 431 HP and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque and it will do 60 mph in 4.4 seconds with the manual and 4.2 seconds with the 7-speed DCT gearbox.
If you’re a numbers game, the M4 is the car for you. However, on the track, the Porsche might walk away with the win, due to a possibly better chassis. Even so, practicality is on the Bimmer’s side as it offers 2 perfectly usable seats for friends and family. We’ll just have to wait and see how the 3 match against each other in the first test drives.
