Up until now, the M2 prototypes we’ve seen out testing were using exhaust systems with black tailpipes. That pointed to the fact that they were probably just development versions and not the finished products.
As we’re getting closer to the official unveiling of the highly-anticipated model, engineers have to try and see how every part of the production car will fare in the real world and therefore, we’re starting to see more and more of the M model.

The latest videos of it recorded on the Nurburgring show it using a new exhaust or, at the very least, new tailpipes. This time they seem to be chromed and they do point to the production version. Furthermore, the car also seems to sound different this time around, with a louder, meaner growl and excellent burbles at the top end.

Whether we’re right in assuming this is the way the car will sound like when it comes out or not remains to be seen but in the meantime, we can definitely tell you that things are looking exciting right now.

370 HP from a 3-liter engine

The M2 will be using a ‘final’ version of the N55 engine we’ve been getting used to, basically being the swan song of the legendary mill. The top version of it, the 6-cylinder will be delivering 370 HP to the rear wheels along with a rumored torque of up to 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) thanks to overboost.

Those figures might not seem like a lot, but the Coupe will also be light on its feet, have a modified wheelbase that is shorter and wider than on the regular 2 Series, offering superior dynamics.

The transmission will come down to either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DCT which should be the faster one of the two. Of course, the manual will be the enthusiast’s choice, though.

As for the release date, we’re expecting a surprise reveal from BMW at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show even though recent rumors claim that won’t happen. Our source claims that the production start for the car will take place in November and that leaves little room for maneuvering the launch date. We’ll just have to wait and see.
